A synthetic peptide (bremelanotide) that activates melanocortin receptors in the brain. Those receptors are part of the pathway involved in sexual desire and arousal. A provider may consider it when the concern is interest rather than physical response.

As a small injection under the skin of the abdomen or thigh, about 45 minutes to an hour before intimacy. It is used as needed, not daily. Your provider sets the dose, shows you how to inject, and tells you how often you can use it.

The most common are nausea, flushing, and headache, especially the first few times. Some people notice a temporary rise in blood pressure or darkening of skin spots with frequent use. Tell your provider about any reaction.
